How We Save Big Money on Diesel Fuel

When you have a rig as big as ours, it helps to save every last penny possible. Especially on something like diesel fuel.

When we’re traveling often, fuel becomes one of our biggest expenses on the road. We’re lucky in that we don’t have to refuel too often, as two full tanks get us about 1500 miles or so down the road. When we do fill up though, we’re putting in 160 gallons…or more.

We discovered an RVers fuel program through a company called TSD Logistics. They’re a trucking company out of Texarkana, Texas and are able to purchase fuel through major truck stops at a discounted price. The greater the quantity they buy, the bigger the discount.

Enter the RVers program.

With more truckers and RVers buying fuel through them, TSD Logistics is able to negotiate lower prices for that fuel. That discount is then passed along to those participating in their program.

Joining is easy. You just head over to their website at http://www.tsdlogistics.com/services/fuel-program/ and fill out a simple application. Within a couple of days they’ll call you and confirm your information. At that time, they’ll also ask for your bank account information, which they’ll link to your TSD Logistics account.

Once approved, you’ll receive a card in the mail that looks just like any other credit card. After a simple activation process, you can use that card at any of their partner truck stops and gas stations (when you join you’ll receive a list of all the places their card can be used). Although there are some gas stations on the list, you receive the biggest fuel discounts at the big truck stops.

You’ll also receive a password to their website where they post real-time fuel rates that they’re paying. For example, the truck stop price might be $3.09/gallon, but via their secure website you learn that their price is $2.65/gallon. This way you can compare fuel prices in your area with their discounted price and make your best decision on where to buy fuel.

Within a couple of days after your diesel purchase, TSD Logistics will process your purchase and deduct that amount directly from your bank account. Through their app, you can track each purchase and see how much money you saved on each transaction by buying through them.

So far we have used the card twice to pay for diesel. We found that we’re saving about $0.40/gallon over the truck stop price, and about $0.20/gallon over the cheapest local gas station price (including Walmart).

Our savings per fill-up has saved us $70 to $80 PER PURCHASE over the truck stop prices, and roughly $20 to $30 over local gas station prices.

Granted, with the quantity of fuel we buy at one time, we see a much bigger discount on each purchase. However, those with smaller trucks will need to refuel more often, thus seeing similar savings with the same amount of fuel.

We have been extremely happy with our experience so far using this RVer diesel fuel program, and highly recommend it to anyone who drives a significant amount of miles in a diesel RV, truck or motorhome.
